Fataawa of the Noble Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (May Allaah have Mercy on him) concerning the Innovation of Multiple Groups and Parties[1]

Question: Is there found in Allaah’s Book or in the words of His Prophet (may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) revelation permitting the multiplicity of societies, (groups) or brotherhoods?

Answer: Yes… I say the multiplicity of societies or brotherhoods is not permitted in the Book or in the Sunnah[2], rather in the Book and the Sunnah it is dispraised. Allah the Most High says:

Verily, those who divide their religion and break up into sects (all kinds of religious sects), you (O Muhammad) have no concern with them in the least. Their affair is only with Allaah, Who then will tell them what they used to do.”

(Al-An’am 6:159)

And Allaah says:

“Each sect rejoicing in that which is with it.”

(Ar-Room 30:32)

Indeed, there is no doubt that these parties are in rivalry with what Allaah has commanded, even though Allaah urges them in His speech:

“And verily! This, your religion (of Islaamic Monotheism) is one religion, and I am your Lord, so keep your duty to Me.

(Al-Mu’minoon 23:52)

Some of them say, “That now, it is not possible for the Da’wah to become strong unless it is done under (or within) a group?[3]  We say that this is not correct, rather the Da’wah is strengthened when all of the people involved are under the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him), following the narrations of the Prophet (may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) and the Rightly Guided Caliphs.[4]

The Noble Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have Mercy on him) also said: We say, “Verily this Ummah would split into seventy-three sects, all of them in the fire except one…”[5] therefore, we say anyone who contradicts what the Prophet (may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his companions were upon enters into these sects[6][7]

The Noble Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have Mercy on him) was also asked: What is your guidance concerning groups and partisanship?

He answered: Verily there is no doubt that groups and partisanship in the religion of Allaah is impermissible and warned against, the Most High says:

“And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. It is they for whom there is an awful torment.”

(Aali Imran 3:105)

And the Most High says:

Verily, those who divide their religion and break up into sects (all kinds of religious sects), you (O Muhammad) have no concern with them in the least. Their affair is only with Allaah, Who then will tell them what they used to do.”

(Al-An’am 6:159)

Therefore, it is impermissible for the Muslim Nation that they split into groups, each group with differing methodologies. Rather it is compulsory to gather upon the religion of Allaah under a single methodology, and it is the methodology of the Prophet (may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him), the Rightly Guided Caliphs, and those companions (whom Allaah) is pleased with. The Prophet (may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, You must hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided Caliphs after me; cling to it with your molar teeth (stubbornly). Beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is misguidance.”[8]

It is not from the guidance of the Prophet (may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) and the Rightly Guided Caliphs to split the Muslim Nation into groups with every group having a leader and a methodology. The leader of the Muslim Nation is one, and there is one leader of every district appointed by the generally agreed upon leader (i.e. the leader of the Muslim Ummah).[9]
