In the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks, Aaron Eugene Nichols, then 17, did what many in the United States couldn’t think of doing: He embraced Islam. “I wanted to know both sides of the story. I wasn’t just going to believe what I heard on TV,” said Nichols, now 21, who has changed his name to Haron, Arabic for Aaron.

Isn’t it interesting when something the Islaamaphobes wish they could cover up comes to light. Whether it’s the fact that Muslims invented/discovered much of the world’s sciences, medicines and laws; or that Muslims from Western Africa had already established trade and were regularly visiting the America’s well before Columbus; or whether it’s the fact that according to some Native American Historians, almost the entire Cherokee tribe had accepted Islaam prior to Columbus’s arrival, the fact of the matter is that the truth will come out. Take for example the fact that Thomas Jefferson owned a Qur’aan. Yes, that Thomas Jefferson. Is it possible that he knew something about Islaam that many of the Islaamaphobes and Neo-Crusaders overlooked?

MACON, Georgia (AP) — Mayor Jack Ellis has converted to Islam and is working to change his legal name to Hakim Mansour Ellis.

Ellis, 61, a Macon native who was raised Christian, said he became a Sunni Muslim during a December ceremony in the west African nation of Senegal.

Ellis said he has studied the Quran for years and that his new religion was practiced by his ancestors before they were brought to North America as slaves.

“Why does one become a Christian?” Ellis said Thursday. “You do it because it feels right. … To me it’s no big deal. But people like to know what you believe in.”

Name-changing by converts is a practice that is considered commendable, though it is typically not required.

Ellis said he would keep his last name at the request of two daughters.

Ellis, whose mayoral term expires this year, said he hasn’t calculated how his religious conversion might affect him politically. He said he is proud to live in a country founded on religious freedom.

“If anybody wants to know about Islam, I can hold an intelligent conversation,” Ellis said. “What I’ve found is how little we know about the religion.”
